Inspired by lessons from some of my favorite Olympic athletes, let’s explore how you can become the Olympian of your industry and life, crafting a legacy that stands the test of time.
Legacy and The Power of Repechage
In the Olympic Games, the concept of “repechage” (French for “second chance”) reveals a powerful truth: life does offer second chances, but only if you’re prepared to seize them. Many athletes who initially faltered were given a second opportunity to compete for medals. Some of these athletes went on to achieve podium finishes, proving that your journey isn’t defined by a single misstep but by how you respond to challenges.
This idea of a second chance can be transformative, especially in your career or business. We often hear that there are no second chances in life, but the truth is, they do exist—they just require strategic thinking, resilience, and the right support system. Olympians who thrived under the pressure of repechage had coaches who helped them pivot, adapt, and capitalize on their second opportunity. You too can create your own “repechage” moment, turning setbacks into stepping stones for future success.
Creating a Legacy Like an Olympian
Creating a legacy isn’t just about winning a gold medal or achieving financial success; it’s about making a lasting impact that transcends your immediate goals. Many Olympians have leveraged their second chances to secure their place in history, not only through their victories but also through the lessons they’ve imparted to future generations. Even those who didn’t win medals found ways to leave their mark, becoming symbols of perseverance and resilience.
In the same way, your legacy isn’t solely about the accolades you accumulate or the wealth you build. It’s about the influence you have on others, the values you pass on, and the example you set. Take the story of the Olympic hurdler who used his repechage opportunity to strategically recalibrate and ultimately excel. This kind of strategic thinking can help you create a legacy that resonates far beyond your lifetime. Whether you’re focused on building a successful business, leading in your industry, or making an impact in your community, your legacy starts with the decisions you make today.
Reflecting on Your Legacy Goals:
If you’ve reached certain milestones in your career, life, or business, it’s natural to want to take a breather. But now is the time to think bigger—beyond your immediate accomplishments and towards a legacy that will endure. Consider what you want to leave behind for your community, family, and the world. Legacy isn’t just about financial wealth; it’s about the experiences you create, the values you embody, and the impact you make on others.
Think about the Olympians whose children now compete, carrying forward the legacy their parents started. There was a discus thrower who broke his father’s world record—a powerful testament to the enduring influence of a legacy. What legacy do you want to leave behind? How can you ensure that your impact is felt by future generations?
Action Steps to Build Your Legacy:
1. Define Your Legacy Goals with Guidance:
- Start by setting goals that are deeply aligned with your true purpose. These goals should resonate with who you are and what you stand for. Avoid setting goals based solely on external influences or societal expectations. Instead, take time to reflect, seek spiritual or internal alignment, and ensure that your goals are authentic and meaningful to you.
- For example, I once aspired to build a $100 million company, inspired by others who had done the same. But every time I thought about it, I felt overwhelmed. It wasn’t until I took a step back and realigned with my true purpose that I realized my vision was even bigger, and more importantly, it felt right for me. This doesn’t mean your goals have to be grand—whether it’s a $1 million company or a $100 million empire, what matters is that it aligns with your values and purpose.
2. Create a Strategic Plan for Long-Term Impact:
- Don’t just focus on short-term achievements. Work with a coach, mentor, advisor or strategist to develop a strategic plan that ensures your legacy endures over time. This could involve setting up your business to grow without constant oversight, learning how to manage wealth for long-term impact, or structuring your projects in a way that they can continue to thrive without you.
- In the financial space, for instance, I learned from a coach how to look at money strategically for long-term impact inside my business. It wasn’t just about saving or accumulating wealth—it was about setting up systems that allow your money to grow and your business to operate sustainably, even without your daily involvement.
3. Engage in Regular, Legacy-Focused Coaching:
- Keep your legacy at the forefront of your mind by engaging in ongoing coaching/consulting sessions that are specifically focused on your long-term goals. These aren’t the typical check-ins or accountability meetings; they are strategic sessions that help you reassess, realign, and ensure that your actions are contributing to your legacy.
- As I’ve mentioned in previous lessons, the coaching required for legacy-building is different. It’s not about weekly check-ins but rather about strategic, less frequent sessions that allow you to focus on the bigger picture. Think about the Olympians who train with six-year plans—this kind of long-term vision is what you need to keep your legacy on track.
4. Stay on Track with Regular Reflection and Adjustment:
- Periodically review your progress, reflect on your journey, and adjust your strategy as needed. Just as Olympians train with long-term goals in mind, you should approach your legacy with the same dedication. Break down your big goals into manageable steps and ensure that you’re consistently moving forward.
- A common mistake many people make is not checking in on their progress or tweaking their strategies as they evolve. It’s important to have a process in place for regular reflection, whether that’s quarterly reviews or annual check-ins, to ensure that your actions are still aligned with your legacy goals.
5. Leverage Your Second Chances:
- Remember the lesson of repechage. If you’ve had setbacks, use them as opportunities to learn, grow, and come back stronger. Be strategic and intentional with your second chances—they could be the key to building an enduring legacy.
- Just like the Olympians who seized their second chances to achieve greatness, you too can make the most of your opportunities. But it’s not enough to simply have a second chance—you must approach it differently, with a renewed strategy and mindset. Otherwise, you risk repeating the same mistakes.
Final Thoughts: Creating a Lasting Legacy
It’s time to show up and show out as the Olympic athlete of your industry. Define what you want your legacy to be, align your actions with that vision, and stay committed to the journey. Whether you’ve faced setbacks or are just starting to think about legacy, remember that with the right approach, you can create a lasting impact that will be remembered for generations to come.
Reflect on how you can create a legacy that goes beyond your immediate goals. Consider how you can align your actions today with the impact you want to leave tomorrow. If you’re ready to take the next step, engage in a legacy-focused coaching session to ensure your journey is strategic, intentional, and impactful.
